Club President's 2017 Annual Report
The 2017 rugby season is one of the most remarkable that we have seen for many years. We have had a great outcome – and not just because of the results that I will touch on later. More importantly, to me as President of the Marist Rugby Club, but also as a rugby mum and as a Marist College parent; we have had a season of which we can be very proud.
In 2017 we fielded 16 teams with 325 rugby players. 29 of our players played in representative teams, three of our senior boys made the Australian Schoolboy representative team, and six of our seniors made the ACT Schoolboys team with a Marist student named as Captain.
Again in 2017, our players displayed the values and heart that mark them as Marist boys. All boys played their best. They turned up for training, turned up for additional gym or boot-camp seasons that the Club funded, and they turned up on the field with great results. Of our 16 teams, 13 made the semis and seven teams made the Grand Finals. Marist College Canberra holds three Premierships this season thanks to the efforts of every player. Extremely important to us as a Club, six of our senior boys gave back to their school this year by coaching junior teams. Thank you to these future leaders.
Whilst I rarely single out the efforts of any particular team as every team makes such a great effort, I would like to acknowledge the 1st XV for the first undefeated season in 24 years, including winning the Grand Final for the first time in 11 years.
I would like to congratulate every single player this season for your personal dedication, hard work and loyalty. You are the reason that we are all here.
We have achieved a lot behind the scenes in 2017. Many of these achievements go unnoticed, but we are starting to refine underpinning policies and procedures to better support our Club in the years to come. Club achievements in 2017 include:
Our Club community again showed great support in 2017 with seven generous sponsors across the sponsorship range, in particular Civium Property Group and the Hellenic Club. Our sponsorship, canteen efforts and fundraising allow us to fund our ongoing purchases of: rugby kit; first aid equipment; jerseys for new players and seniors; training gear; and keep our registration fees as low as possible for all families.
In 2017, we saw more volunteers and helpers than we have ever seen previously. We had 12 parents working in often unseen and unappreciated roles on the Marist Rugby Club Committee; over 60 coaches and managers, who are a mix of teachers, parents and senior students; dedicated First Aid Volunteers for every team (many teams with two First Aiders); Field Marshall volunteers from every team; Ground Marshalls who are at the fields at 8am laying out cones; parents, students and teachers packing up those cones at 5pm. Marist Rugby wouldn’t exist without you – so thank you!
I would particularly like to acknowledge the 2017 referees. It’s a tough job and I see many people each week criticising your calls, the same people who will be on those sidelines next year -not getting in there and having a go by donning the Referee jersey like you have. It takes courage to do what you do- we need more referees – and we appreciate your skills and dedication.
To all of our wonderful Marist rugby players, our coaches, managers, volunteers, parents, teachers, referees, canteen helpers – a heartfelt THANK YOU! We’ve had a great 2017 season and we look forward to more Marist Rugby greatness (and a few surprises for you) in our 50th year anniversary in 2018.

- Our first early-season social evening for parents that raised $5000 towards new equipment.
- A specially run ARU First Aid course with 15 Marist parents and volunteers. This was a great achievement by our First Aid Coordinator Danielle Ryan, and will continue.
- We continued our strength, conditioning and fitness program and this year made it available to every Marist rugby player. Again this is something we will continue in future.
- Our spectacularly successful canteen made $14000 profit (which is particularly impressive as our canteen only opens for our six home games and a special thank you to Patrick Bouquiaux for his work in this area);
- We revised or introduced key policies for consistency and improved information- the Marist Rugby Policy Handbook, the Marist Rugby Volunteer Handbook, and Marist Rugby Coaching Skills Matrix. We uploaded all of these and made them more transparent and readily accessible to all Marist Rugby players and families.
- We increased our website and Facebook presence with over 139,000 hits on our website in 2017 (not bad for a school sports club). Special thanks to Dave Graham our website manager.
- We were able to provide $200 per team towards team functions to celebrate the end of another successful season.
