TEAM MATTERS
THE SEASON TIMETABLE & WHERE DO WE PLAY
When is the first game? ...your coach and manager might organise a "friendly" and trial games mat be organised against other school or clubs.... However the season, proper always starts on the first Saturday in May, just after the Term One holidays (May 3rd in 2014)
DO I HAVE TO PLAY FOR MARIST?
My son played for a local club before coming to Marist. Is he allowed to keep playing for that club? ...... No, it is a strict school policy that he can only play for the school, and this is part of the conditions of his admission to the College.
While that might seem harsh to some, it is necessary for many reasons, and the boys will form friendships at school such that they wouldn't want to play against their mates, anyway.
This policy is not restricted to Rugby, it applies to all sports at Marist (and, in fact, to most schools across the country).
SOCIAL
If you do have an away trip, we highly recommend that you discover the fun of touring - nothing like an organised BBQ lunch at a winery on the way home from the Yass game, or Collector pub, on the way home from Goulburn, or a nice stop in Jindabyne!! ....a great way to foster team harmony and make new friends.......DON'T LEAVE IT TO YOUR TEAM MANAGER - make that your contribution to the team.
If you don't have an away game, venues such as Fadden Pines or Kambah Park are always great places for the parents and the boys to enjoy a get together, have a sausage sizzle and kick the footy around!
What other social functions are there? ..The only organised function is the Annual Dinner in August, this year and our Sponsors day, but it is highly recommended that you get your team organised for a picnic or a barbie sometime during the season - away games present a great opportunity to get together, even if only at the local Macca's!

FAQs

TEAM MATTERS
- Who is my coach ... we usually won't know that until closer to the end of Term 1
- What team will I be in? ... that will depend on grading - initially, training will be conducted in age groups until you are graded! You will be graded into Royals (div 1), Sky (div 2) or Blues (div 3).
- When do I train? ... once you are graded your coach/manager will let you know, but most training takes place after school on Tuesdays and Thursdays - this can change depending on each team's circumstances (eg some junior teams only train one day per week, usually Wednesday)
- Which day do we play on? - Always on Saturday in the normal season, but if there are two Marist teams in the same division, when it is their turn to play each other, we often play those rounds on a weekday afternoon, after school. You will get plenty of notice. In pre-season, you need to stay flexible, because there could be occasional Sunday or mid-week games.
- What grounds will my son(s) be playing at? .. Most Marist teams play their home games at the College, but usually two or three junior age groups will be allocated Garran Oval (near the hospital), as we cannot handle the full complement of teams at the school.. A complete list of the away grounds is found by clicking here
- When does the season get underway? Just after Term 2 resumes... first Saturday in May - the most up to date information is on the Home Page ..and please note that the draws tend to change at very short notice at the start of the season, while clubs and teams sort themselves out, so the final draw is not normally published until Thursday evening when the Rugby Master receives them from ACT Junior Rugby and passes them along to the webmaster.
- The ACT Junior Rugby Union uses a website called League Republic , which is updated by the ACT JRU. We use a system that automatically updates the draws, ladders and results from that website and "pushes" them onto your son(s)' MY TEAM page, so you should not have to look too far for the latest information - however, no system is perfect, and the Rugby Master will push out the final draw as early in the week as possible and we will publish it on the Draws page as soon as we are able.
- Rest assured that any late changes affecting away travel will also be followed up with an email so that we cause the least inconvenience to you ... (this is particularly relevant to the more junior teams who tend to play further afield at places such as Broulee, Yass, Cooma, Jindabyne and Goulburn.
- What time will I be playing? .. see the attached table
- When does it finish? Hopefully it finishes for your son(s) on the first weekend in September, when they win their Grand Final at Canberra Stadium in front of thousands of Marist supporters!
- What about the holidays..... no normal competition rounds during school holidays ...(you won't miss out on your Ski trip!!) ....see the Calendar.
- What if my son shows potential as a representative player? ........ the school will recognise it pretty quickly and your son will be given every opportunity to progress:
- What about other tournaments - generally, one or two tournaments during the season for certain age groups.. there is also a 7's tournament the week after Grand Final, run by Uni-Norths Juniors, but this is usually a volunteer event, not officially entered by the College or the Club (separate insurance might be needed for that - check with the Rugby Master)
- Is there a Presentation/ Awards Ceremony? Yes, there is a presentation afternoon/ evening Wednesday 11th September, this year) just after th
- Will there be team photos? - Yes, these are usually taken on one of our home gala days around mid-season - Team managers and School sports staff will make sure that you have notice and your son will be given an envelope to order photos.
- I don't know the first thing about Rugby! ...click here!!
- Do the boys go on Annual Tours? - Generally, no. Tours are at the discretion of the school and those teachers who are willing to give up their time...it is not an automatic right to expect a tour each and every season, but Marist Rugby considers itself an elite Rugby school, which will give senior players the opportunity to learn and develop as opportunities arise. More junior players will occasionally get the opportunity to take part in camps and some inter-school tournaments, but these are not a set part of the annual program.... and, of course the ACT Junior Rugby Union and ACT Schools Rugby Union have representative programs commencing at the Under 12 level, going right through to Australian Schoolboys level..
- The ACT Junior Rugby Union, in association with the BRUMBIES, also runs one day School Holiday camps for junior players (Under 10 to Under 13) throughout the ACT and Southern Inland region, in the Term 2 holiday window. Cost is usually between $55 and $65, and the boys have a great day, lunch is included in the price, and they come home with a ball, poster, cap and great memories.
