Coaching courses

Did you know that it is a mandatory requirement that all coaches and assistant coaches have SmartRugby qualifications? This course is offered free of charge by ARU/Brumbies

If you're contemplating coaching a Marist team then now is a good time to obtain, update or upgrade your formal qualifications. The Marist Rugby Club will support you to get your qualifications by reimbursing you for the course fees if you also coach/assistant coach a Marist team. Here are some details from the Brumbies Office:

COACHES AND MANAGERS

The series of pages is a useful source of information to assist our coaches and managers when they take on the managment of a Marist rugby team.
The Coaches and Managers Handbook is an important document that provide information on things you need to know and do and also some tips on how you can manage the team to enhance the boys rugby experience - otherwise it's up to you on what activities you want to do with your team to involve the parents and the boys.

ALL Coaches and Managers (especially parents newly taking on these roles at the Marist Rugby Club) are encouraged to attend the Coaches & Managers Information Evening to obtain information about the upcoming season.

Minimum coaching qualifications

The ARU has set a minimum requirement that team coaches (and match officials), or persons in charge of a team on game day, MUST have current SmartRugby qualifications. SmartRugby is a free 2-3 hours course conducted by ARU coaching development offices and goes through a practical application of the basic elements of rugby, and in particular the safety elements to be applied when coaching rugby, especially the scrum cadence and "mayday" procedures. The SmartRugby qualification needs to be maintained each year via an online activity but the face-to-face course must be updated every 2 years. In the ACT the Brumbies office conducts the courses, please view their website for course dates.

It is expected that ALL Marist rugby coaches will obtain these minumum qualifications and it is highly recommended that the team manager also obtain their SmartRugby qualifications so the team is covered when the coach may be absent.

Accreditation

The Marist Rugby Club, would ideally like to have ALL of its coaches with Foundation (Level 1) Coaching accreditation. These courses are conducted by the Brumbies office. The Club will reimburse the costs for this course.

Pathway Laws (U6 - U12)

In age groups U6-U12, there are variations to the standard Laws of the Game specific to each age group. These are slight changes to the laws to simplify and increase safety for kids of these age groups. If you are coaching any of these age groups it is up to you to make yourself aware of these specific amendements and requirements and coach to them.

U13-U18 play under the U19 Laws, again coaches should be familiar with these laws and coach to them.
See our Laws of the Game page to access the laws and variations.
