ROUND 5 – 29 MAY –V- DARAMALAN – WON 24 – 19
In challenging conditions MCC hosted Daramalan for the first time in 2010.
The game started well for the home team forcing an error of the kickoff, the
resulting scrum saw Mark Cole break the line and go 40m to score for an
early lead. Some poor decision making in our own half gave Daramalan field
position and possession and they were able to respond with a converted try
in the corner to take a 7-5 lead. From here both teams battled to stay out
of their halves, not wanting to play the game close to their lines in tough
conditions.
MCC was next to score with a great team try.
Tom Bodman found himself in space down the short side and was able to link
with Luke Russell to score with Mark Cole converting to take 12-7 lead.
Daramalan was able to force errors consistently throughout the remainder of
the half and were able to score again near the end of the half to go into
the break at 12 all.
The second half saw a more consistent performance across the board from all
MCC players. The forwards consistently provided good set piece and turn over
ball with the backs capitalising to provide good field position. MCC 3rd
try came through skipper Jack Jones who was able to finish off some solid
phase play.
At 19-12 down Daramalan fought back and were able to force mistakes from
Marist. This saw a 5m attacking scrum from Daramalan who were able to
convert the opportunity with a soft try next to the posts to square up at 19
all.
The final 10 minutes were MCC’s strongest in the toughest conditions of the
day, the final try came from solid defence structure from the backs forcing
an error and Mark Cole swooping on the ball for a 50 meter effort and a 24 –
19 score line.
Another 70 minute performance that resulted in the 3rd win of the
season. Well done to all especially those who stepped up from 2’s and 16’s
to cover early injuries.
We also wish lock Rowan O’Brien all the best and a speedy recovery who
unfortunately broke his leg during the game and will miss the rest of the
season, all the best Roe !!!

day - just keeping the camera dry must be a challenge.
ROUND 4 - -V- WESTS – 22 MAY – WESTS 22 – MARIST 10
Round 4 saw another tough game versus Wests.
The game was set to be an entertaining affair with both teams showing early
season form. Unfortunately MCC was unable to maintain any pressure on Wests
early in the game forfeiting possession in contact and missing basic
tackles. Wests did take advantage of the wealth of possession and scored two
tries to take a 12-0 lead.
The only highlights of the first half came from a Josh Grogan break,
finished by Tim Johnston and converted by Mark Cole who also kicked a
penalty on half time to go into the break down 12-10.
The second half required a lift in intensity, greater aggression around the
ball and a low tackle focus. This wasn’t to be with MCC consistently giving
possession back to Wests and failing to bring the ball carrier to deck. A
second half try and penalty goal saw Wests extend their lead to final score
of 22-10. To Wests credit they showed up to play, their forwards were hungry
and aggressive, their ball running was direct and they defended their line
admirably, a lesson all MCC players involved should take from the game.

ROUND 3
- 15 MAY --V- EDDIES
May 15th saw Marist 1st XV host St Edmunds (SEC)
in the first home game for the 2010 season. Both teams came out firing
with Marist gaining early field position and possession. Play went back
and forth before Marist managed to put together multiple phases with Tom
Cusack finishing smartly in the corner for a 5-0 lead. SEC responded
quickly through a soft try of a scrum to run in under the posts. SEC
dominated possession for the middle part of the half again taking
advantage of easy field position to score and lead 12-10. MCC kept
battling and were rewarded late in the first half with Chris Russell
again the beneficiary of some good lea up work to score in the corner.
MCC went into the half trailing 10-12. The first half had been a
physical affair which set up for a great finish to the game.
The second half saw a more clinical effort in attack with plenty of
meters made, basic skills errors again saw precious opportunities
wasted. Marist opened the scoring for the half through Tom Cusack who
finished off a good series of pick and drives from the forward pack. At
17-12 up Marist continued to let SEC into the game and another soft try
of set piece saw SEC take the lead 19-17. Marist continued to attack
well with M Cole, L Russell, J Reynolds and J Andrew Copsy running well.
Captain Jack Jones found himself on the end of another good attacking
raid to cross the line with a Mark Cole conversion taking MCC out to a
24 -19 lead. SEC in a typical fashion fought hard and with some direct
and aggressive running scored twice in quick succession to turn a
deficit into a 29-24 lead. Credit here must go to the boys for charging
the kick close to the posts and pressuring a miss from the SEC kicker.
The final 8 minutes proved to be a tense and nail biting affair with
numerous opportunities, more basic errors from both teams saw these
opportunities come and go before Chris Russell again found space on the
end of an Alex Bacon pass to dive into the corner and level at 29 all.
The final play saw SEC deep in attack with an unsuccessful field goal
attempt 20m out directly in front. The game finished at 29 – 29 in a
thrilling and entertaining game of school boy rugby. Well done to all
players for a terrific 70 minute performance.

Round 2
Round 2 saw Marist take on the first of
the schools in Canberra Gammar. Marist started well controlling possession
and building phases. Early field position was rewarded with points when Mark
Cole knocked over a penalty goal. Marist gave possession back from the kick
off and a following penalty allowed CGS to level at 3 all. Play continued to
go back and forth between the teams before and excellent scrum and backline
move allowed Mark Cole to slice through to link with Chris Russell who was
bundelled into touch close to the line. The following pressure and
possession allowed for Tom Cusack to capitalize on a gap with some strong
direct running. The try was converted by Cole for a 10-3 lead. Marist
allowed CGS back into the half with some poor ball control and basic skill
errors. CGS kicker nailed a penalty for a 10-6 half time score. The second
half was littered with more skill errors which gave CGS a wealth of
possession. CGS took the most of a visit into the 22 with a soft try from a
penalty tap 10 meters out. Another successful conversion saw Marist on the
wrong side of a 13-10 scoreline with 10minutes remaining. To the boys credit
they lifted a gear and found themselves with numerous point scoring
opportunities. A lack of patience and more skill errors saw these
opportunities go to waste. Moments before full time replacement half Nick
Tankey and winger Chris Russell combined for a great try down the short side
with Russell grounding the ball inches from touch. Cole again converted for
a 17-13 win. Well done to all players who again stood up for the 70minutes
to grind out this close win.

Marist 1st XV Round
1 v Tuggeranong Vikings
Saturdays game saw no
less than 11players debut for the 1st XV. Marist faced a spirited
and determined Vikings team who combined good power, aggression and slick
running to push the boys for the full seventy minutes. Marist opened the
scoring with Mark Cole crossing out wide on the end of some good lead up
work. Marist then defended for the remainder of the half due to some aimless
kicking and poor option taking. Vikings scored on half time to go into the
break 5 all. The second half required greater intensity and much better ball
retention. Marist scored first again in the second half through Tim Johnston
to lead 12 – 7 before some lazy defence saw Vikings cross easily to level at
12 all. Plagued by carless errors and poor set piece Marist spent much of
the half defending before some rare field possession saw Mark Cole covert a
penalty goal to take the lead 15-12. The final 15 minutes saw the most
entertaining rugby of the match with Vikings never say die attitude and
superior aggression at the breakdown rewarded to take the lead 19 -15.
Marist stepped up in the final stanza and after some great lead up work from
both wingers an opportunity presented itself for Tom Bodman to cross in the
corner to take the lead 20-19. Marist were able to defend the final minutes
to earn the two points and take the first win for 2010 season.
