Well unfortunately the final chapter did not go to plan. What has been called a challenging year I think that the effort given by every member of this squad in Saturday’s game best sums up the spirit and commitment that the rugby club should be proud of. Against a bigger and faster team, it was evident from the opening whistle that it was the opposition that was nervous and under the pump. This was reflected in them taking a shot for penalty instead of going for the try that was the norm during the season. They treated us with respect – and that was what we wanted. To come back from a thrashing in round one to now stretch the undefeated side of the competition gained the admiration of everyone watching this contest.
Boys, we were all disappointed with the result. No one likes losing. But you need to hold your heads up high and be reminded just where you have come from this season. We did not go into one game with a full squad this year and the closest we came was against Joeys where we took them to the wire. That showed what a classy outfit you are and what could have been. Most week’s depleted, you gave 100% in each game, and that is all I asked for. Not once, though, did anyone complain or use this as an excuse. Instead you worked harder and in the past month and lost to the three leading sides by the barest of margins. What a terrific effort.
The tight five of Tyson, Matt, Liam, Max, Oliver, Tom played above themselves most games and improved dramatically as the season progressed. You worked tirelessly in the centre and adopted the new defensive structures to ensure the attack had to work. Winning scrums against the feed on Saturday against the Vikings huge pack was one of the highlights of the year. Well done boys.
The loose forwards were amazing in each game we competed in. Mike, Joe, and Nick you took it upon yourselves to lift the team in so many situations throughout the season and played footy at a high standard consistently. You were leaders in attack and defence and not once did you shirk your responsibility. You adapted easily to changing team plans and structures and you continually put the opposition under constant pressure. I look forward to watching your progress in rugby in the coming years.
Our inside backs of Isaac, Zac Ted and Max were new combinations this year and continued to work on structures right up to the final game. Isaac grew into the half position and the work controlling the forwards and providing quick ball led to many exciting backline moves. Ted, I need to thank you for the efforts given this year. You were plucked out of the forwards and put into the centres to fill a need. You didn’t whinge despite wanting to be in the forwards. But your defence in particular hurt many opposition sides and stopped their progress on many occasions. Max, despite coming back from a serious injury, not once did I see you once play tentatively and in fact you were outstanding in defence but more importantly attack. You caused the opposition backs to second guess themselves and your line running was fantastic. It is one regret I have, not having you on the paddock for the full season. To the conductor – Zac – who controlled every aspect of our play. In kicking, running or setting up moves you were a constant threat to the opposition. Defensively for a fly half you were rock solid.
The back five are the ones who really improved and created many opportunities to score. The confidence of Marco, Gio, Sam and Tom improved with every game. The speed was a constant threat to the opposition while defensively you improved out of sight to block any attack sent your way. Tom, being new to Marist is always a hard thing in Yr. 10 but you did fit in well with this team and in fact was one of our major contributors throughout the year. Marist is lucky to have you on board.
A special mention to our captain Mike. You were an inspiration as our leader, setting the example at training, in the warm-up and during the game. You took on board every suggestion I gave you and instilled a confidence from each member of the team who wanted to play for you. Your leadership skills are unquestionable and I thank you sincerely for the support given to me and more importantly the team.
Thanks to Sam, Mitch and Aidan who filled in as reserves from the Sky team on the weekend and contributed wholeheartedly to the team effort.
I would like to thank also Tom, Anthony, Harrie and Brayden who, despite injured, continued to turn up and support the team in every game. This just shows what a tight knit group this is. Another regret is not having the chance to coach you fine young men this season.
So boys the game didn’t go to script. But I can honestly say that I could not be prouder of your effort. I want to thank each and every one of you for the chance to coach you this year and the commitment made in ensuring that you improved as a team. It has been an absolute pleasure coaching you, one of my most enjoyable, and I wish you all the best of luck for your rugby futures.
Before I sign off I just want to thank Luke Croker in his role as manager. The work done behind the scenes goes far and beyond the call of duty. Nothing I ask is too much trouble and the side is so much better with him a part of it. Thanks mate and see you next season. And thanks to Sonja for taking photos of the game each week and posting here for all to see.
To the families. What a loyal and supportive group you are. Despite the frustrations and disappointments on the field you continued to turn up each week to support us. You should be proud of your son’s effort this season and the team as a whole and I hope success is around the corner for you.
Well that brings an end to another rugby season. It is one that I will look back on with fondness in future years, not for the success but because of the group of people I worked with. Enjoy the off season and see you on the rugby fields in 2017.

Match Report by Tony Sullivan
We were up against the side that are undefeated and had previously beaten us easily in the first round. So it was always going to be interesting just how this team was going to respond. Struggling for numbers all year this team has shown amazing tenacity to come within one try of the top three sides in the previous two games – so this had to give us some confidence. Our defensive structures had improved, our work at the breakdown had become so much more effective while our backs had been causing havoc out wide. But how would we go against a team that has gone through the season virtually untroubled so far.
We should not have worried. This team is made of the right stuff and from the opening kick-off Vikings knew we were not going to lie down without a fight. This first half was the most impressive effort Marist has put in all season. The defence against much bigger opponents was inspirational. And the attack was looking dangerous. The effort was that impressive that we were ahead on the scoreboard at the break – 8-7 – the first time Vikings had been put in that position. It could have even got more dominant if not for a great backline move to be called back for what could only be called a line ball decision. We were under the posts if the call went our way.
We stressed at the break that the effort had to be maintained for another 30 minutes because Vikings would not be enjoying this situation. Our defence had to lift, the work at the break down had to be clinical and the backs had to vary their play to put the opponents on the back foot. It was a great start – Marist continually frustrating the Vikings attack. They forced the pass and had no answer to our brick wall defence. We were moving up fast as one to limit their time and space which was working. We didn’t do that twice in the second half and paid the penalty – Vikings taking advantage and scoring two individual tries.
Marist didn’t drop their guard and in fact lifted. We were making numerous breaks, especially on the edge and had a few opportunities to score. We were denied twice – dropping the ball over the line as a result of great defence and also being held up over the line. There were chances to spin the ball where there appeared to be gaps but didn’t utilise this. But how could we fault this effort. The boys were playing out of their skins, having only one reserve to call upon. Vikings had 8 – allowing them fresh legs throughout the contest. This will be different next game where we will have a full complement on the bench.
I have not mentioned one player today – the focus was on the team. Unbelievably between the first and second time we have met this team we have improved by 40 points. If we continue to improve – work on the key areas that let us down on Saturday – who knows what can happen. The effort and willingness to succeed by each member of this squad has been inspirational to be part of. Not once have I heard boys complain about the situation we have been in this season – sometimes turning up with only 13 fit players. You work hard at training and play so committed on the weekends. There is no team in this rugby club that deserves to be there on Saturday more than you do. I hope the rugby gods will be looking down favourably on us during this game as you all certainly deserve success. Vikings remain undefeated this season – what a game for them to experience their first loss. If you turn up with the same dedication and will to win I just have a feeling that we are in for something special.
Good luck boys, enjoy the week but most importantly be confident that we can do this.

Match Report by Tony Sullivan
If every team was able to demonstrate the fight and determination that the U15 Royals displayed in this game, then Marist rugby would be in safe hands. What a gutsy effort against one of the two big guns in the competition. They were faster, bigger and they had plenty of reserves but this appeared to simply inspire Marist to lift and give the game one almighty shake.
Lack of numbers has been a continued theme this season and this really tested our stamina towards the back end of the game. However, the forwards were trying to dictate the breakdown and make an impact with every collision. Our loose forwards – Mike, Joe and Nick were tremendous yet again, while our front row of Liam, Matt and Tyson worked themselves to a standstill. Tom, Ted and Oliver were stopping any attacking raids and also made huge inroads into their defence.
The backs were very impressive. Isaac and Zac continue to make a good combination and provided quality ball to Ted, Sam and Max in the centres. While outside outside backs of Tom, Marco and Gio were great both in attack and in defence. The danger man from round 1 was hardly sighted and this was due to the excellent defence from all members of our backline. I have to give a huge rap to Max whose defence in the centres has lifted our side since his return from injury.
Our game was not perfect from any means – too many dropped balls in attacking situations, two sin bins and costly penalties turned the tide every time we were on the attack. We cut these mistakes out of our game and this season would have been a different story. However, when the opposition coach comes up and says that he was impressed with Marists effort considering all the injuries then I would say the effort was evident for all to see today.
Boys I am proud to have witnessed this game today and in particular the effort given by every member of the side.
You deserve things to go your way and hopefully this will happen in the next few games. But despite the results and where we come in this competition I have to say that you are one of the few teams I have coached that never complains despite the setbacks we face. You work as a team, for each other and it is a privilege to coach you.
Could you please meet Mr Croker in S4 at recess Monday as he needs to discuss the week’s training schedule? When this has been confirmed let’s be committed to finishing off this season on a positive note.

Match Report by Tony Sullivan
What might have been. The day commenced with the team photo on the picturesque ovals of St Edmunds and if people with a keen eye could focus on the U15 Royals team shot they would be able to determine there were more boys in the photo then there were out on the field. This just goes to show how frustrating it has been for the team that injuries have made an incredible impact on how we have fared this year so far.
But we are not the first team to have this done to us and won’t be the last – and we try to use it as a source of inspiration and respond the best way we can – on the field. But gee it’s hard when you don’t know who is playing each week and more injuries occur on game day. I can’t remember the time I ran over a black cat or walked under a ladder or any other superstition – but surely there must be a reason for this.
Anyway to the game. What a great session on Thursday, complemented with the best warm up of the season leading into the game. The boys were ready. We stressed the need to start well as this has not been the case in many games. The boys stuck to the plan and started brilliantly, scoring a great team try to Marco, after a wonderful cut out pass by Tyson, our prop. A wonderful individual try by Tom from fullback who backed himself put us in a good position. Our defence was tough and cut down the options of the Eddies playmakers. Matt H was having his best game and was supported well by Liam, Max, Tom, Tyson and Oliver. There work at the breakdown was impressive and relentless. Our loose forwards Mike, Joe and Nick were a tower of strength and really worked hard at the ball and in support on the attack. I have to give a huge rap to our captain Mike who led by example throughout the game and his leadership skills really stood out.
The backs were amazing – when on song they were smooth and precise with the ball, causing havoc to any opposition. The variety in attack puts the defence in two minds. And the speed we have out wide compliments this. Isaac and Rossy were controlling the game extremely well and in fact nullified anything the Eddies “big names” had to offer. This allowed Jenko, Max, Marco, Tom, Sam and Harrie to use the space provided and push forward on many occasions. The defence from the backs was also very impressive.
Being left with no reserves meant we had little juice at the back end of the half and this allowed Eddies to score two soft tries. This was compounded when our centre Max, who was having his first game back from injury and also having a huge impact, left the field with a leg injury. This meant we had to completely reshuffle our backline – calling on Mitch from the grandstand to move into the half position. This was a great effort from Mitch who had just played a full game in the sky game. Eddies sensed that we were trying to readjust our positions in the backline and took advantage, scoring two tries. This Marist side never gives up and were rewarded with a converted try right on fulltime. We seemed to be gaining momentum at the back end of the game and who knows what might have happened if we had 5 minutes more.
Boys, the look on your faces after the game was one of disappointment – and rightly so. You all put in a huge effort and deserved better. However, while there is life there is hope. We still have 3 games to go to consolidate our place in the semis and from there who knows – rugby can be a funny game. I could not have been prouder of you as a team on Saturday. You just never gave up and Eddies certainly knew that they had been in a contest. For the next three weeks we play for pride and our aim is to finish this season on a positive. I look forward to working with you all during this time.

Match Report by Tony Sullivan
This was a game that we didn’t want to win - we had to win. It meant that we finished off the term on a positive and can begin fresh when we return from holidays knowing, despite all the obstacles faced, we are in contention for the semi-finals. What an effort. Every member of this squad held his own and the team on the whole produced their best effort for the entire game of the season.
Turning up to Trinity’s home ground in Goulburn on a wet Saturday morning was not the best for a team low on troops. While the rest of the rugby club made their way to Grammar, the U15 Royals made the road trip on their own to play a game that was to define our season. Lose and we would be behind the eight ball when we returned from the break. Win and we would be closing in on fourth position.
Injuries have cruelled us for the entire season but sickness was also taking its toll with Joey and Mike suffering from the dreaded bug. (I must say that it was a huge effort for Mike to play and showed why he is our valued captain). But I keep telling this group that we can’t use these situations as an excuse, we need to accept them as a challenge and make the opportunity for someone else to put their hand up. On Saturday this is what happened!!
Ted and Sam in the centres were tremendous in defence, nullifying any attack Trinity tried to lay on. This was evident for the whole game, something we haven’t seen until now. Our wingers Harrie and Webby were safe and the opposition found it tough to get around us. In fact, all four backs caused frustration in the opposition’s attack which led to mistakes. Hopefully Webby’ s injury isn’t too serious and he will be back on the paddock soon. Our new fullback, Tom, was most impressive. What a game. He was safe in defence and caused enormous problems with the ball. I think he will only get better which is a positive sign for us. Isaac was playing strongly and instructing the forwards where to go in defence. His service was slick and general kicking got us out of trouble on many occasions.
Now the forwards – what an effort. A pack that continues to build in confidence and structure each week, despite having new faces every game. Tyson, Matt, Aidan and Liam were dominant up front. Matt took leadership this week and played his best game for the year while Liam was playing his first game in the top grade and wasn’t out of his depth. Max, Oliver. Tom and Nick were tireless in the workload and were everywhere. I hadn’t seen this as consistent in a game until this weekend. It made a huge difference. Defensively they were strong and in attack solid. Mike and Gio (until he had to move to wing) were a constant threat with and without the ball and caused the Trinity pack to back pedal on more than one occasion.
And finally to Zac. He held this team together with his mature approach to the game and led by example. His defence was outstanding and vision in scoring the try off a penalty was impressive. He led the team around the paddock and kept his cool despite the Trinity side receiving numerous penalties inside our quarter with less than 5 to go.
So what a way to finish the term. Despite playing with 14 players for over half the game, the tenacity and spirit displayed in the game was inspirational. You deserved some luck and finally you got some. We are to get some players returning next term so this will only add to position and assist as we head towards the business end of the season. Enjoy the break boys and I look forward to working with you all again after the holidays.

Match Report by Tony Sullivan
A battered and bruised squad of 16 turned up to Gowrie to play a Vikings team that were determined to put a dent on our aspirations to go places this year. I can’t believe the amount of injuries this team has endured up to now, and to make matters worse Joey and Mike turned up with minor injuries that would normally have kept them out of the game, while Sam got out of his sick bed to help his mates out. This attitude and willingness to step up is impressive and one that is greatly admired by those from within this tight knot group.
How can you prepare for any game when you don’t know who is turning up? Or having to prepare throughout the week with half a team. This would put a strain on any team. However, what we have here is a group of rugby players that are willing to do their best because they know it is the right thing to do. We have players out of position – and this isn't fair. Marco was given the difficult task of playing in the 10 jumper, a huge ask. Gio was asked to defend in the centres against speedier opposition players, difficult at the best of times. Joey, one of our best workers in the forwards was given the task of tightening the centre with his defence. While Tom, who had played every game in the backs was given the task of lifting his work rate and move to flanker. Not one player whinged, but instead took the challenge in both hands and did their best in difficult circumstances.
Special mention to Zac, who is continually moved from half to 5/8 due to a number of reasons. He is the one we look to when in trouble and his leadership and experience, deft kicking and organisation is a real asset to this team. Kicking 4/4 and scoring a try got us out of a real hole on Saturday. Another leader who has risen above all expectations is Mike, the team captain. One word to sum up his play is inspirational. He goes about his work quietly but effectively. He is one player who is keeping this team together and his leadership on Saturday, despite injury, was sensational.
We had players who really stood up as individuals on Saturday - Luka had his best game, Damaging with the ball and without. Tom D continues to develop his game while Tom B was very impressive in his first attempt in the forwards. Nick Ball and Ted continues to work hard and their effort at the breakdown assists the team constantly during a game. Matt and Tyson are forming a good combination in tight, while Matt’s work with the ball at the line-out is a strength. Lachie, playing his first game, is going to cause plenty of headaches after he becomes familiar with the team structures.
Our backs tried hard and individually did some good things. Kaden, Gio, Isaac and Sam positioned themselves well in defence and tried hard with the ball. Marco was given a thankless job of guiding the team around from 5/8. Never played there before, he tried to get things moving. However, once he moved back to fullback his pace and positioning caused havoc to the Vikings outside backs.
What is the theme here? Everyone in this team tried hard as individuals. No one can doubt that. It is as a team we really need to aim up. We had ample opportunity to score with overlaps galore, but instead we took on the line ourselves. This is not what we are about. Too many penalties from individuals lacking discipline, this has to stop. Arm grabbing by individuals in defence, disappointing as tackling technique was our focus all week. One player trying to commit at the breakdown – where are our numbers. Running hard to the defence, but too upright becoming an easy target and generally losing possession.
Boys your attitude is tremendous, your willingness to play anywhere to help the team is a credit to you and the work of individuals is impressive. But this will only go so far as seen on Saturday. We need to develop a mindset that we are here as a team, we play as a team and we are going onto that footy field wanting to be a vital part of this team. You need to be a player that the rest of the squad want to play with. We have a few tough games coming up and we are struggling for numbers. But do we use this as an excuse or do we use this as an incentive. We have a tremendous attitude during the week, now it is time to see it on the field. I look forward to working with you this week as we prepare to aim up against the favourites for the comp – let’s put a dent in their aspirations this week.

Match Report by Tony Sullivan
Not the result we were after. However, with 14 players either injured or away on the Yr. 10 camp, I suppose it was always going to be a tough ask against one of the top teams in the comp. To be down to 14 players on the field for a lengthy part of the game to an already undermanned side just made life harder. Some people questioned why were played the game and in many ways they had a good point. Was it an unfair expectation to have our boys run out on Saturday? In some people’s eyes it is an even bet but perhaps we need to look at the total picture.
During the week we had an excellent build up – working out plays and a structure that would frustrate the bigger Uni-Norths forwards. We were going to play a more expansive style of play and introduce an astute kicking game that would tire the opposition. We talked about how important our defence needed to be for the entire contest, while the work at the breakdown was an area we just had to fix. So it was a huge test for the players who took the field but after Thursday’s session there was an air of confidence with the team.
The warm up was impressive. The boys appeared ready. But like earlier pre-season games for some reason the game plan we had put in place just wasn't evident in our game. For the first 15 minutes Uni Norths dictated every aspect of the game. Our tackling was on the verge of embarrassing during this part of the contest. Arm grabbing and high shots just played into their hands as their #10 weaved his magic to make us look ordinary. This was not the team who have trained so hard in the off season. Our general kicking let us down and all the talk pre game appeared to be lost in translation. The forwards acted like rolling pins as the Uni Norths pack drove through the middle.
The score was 21-0 at half time. It felt like a lot more. We addressed the issues at half-time and refocussed on us – not the opposition., This appeared to work as for the first time Marist displayed some fighting spirit. Tom Davey was playing his best game of the year while Max and Nick were tireless workers in tight. Max is developing some fine skills and this should develop as the season unfolds. Luka was playing on one leg and needs to be recognised for his efforts during the game, while Tyson, Tim, Sam, Avnoor, Aidan, Ted and James were starting to become more affective in general play.
Our backs had a mixed game. Far too often the ball was kept in hand instead of using the width of the field. When we did this it opened the spaces for Marco, Cody, Gio, and Max to use their speed and make ground. This was far too rare though. When we did it provided us with two tries. Mitch and Liam tried to organise the forwards the best they could while Kaden and Sam offered some hope in the centres. Isaac was appointed captain for this game and he tried hard to get things going, but with our backs to the wall it was always going to be a tough ask. He should feel proud that the ref took time at the end to congratulate us for the spirit we displayed during the game.
Boys it was a difficult game on Saturday – we could use plenty of excuses for the defeat. However, no matter who runs onto the field we need to tackle, we need to be effective in the rucks and we need to use the ball more expansively. We need to learn from this game and use it as motivation for the games coming up. A few years ago I had a team lose a game early in the season 46-0. We learnt from that and beat them in the Semi. I say this because we have the talent in this squad to do something special this year. It means that each of us need to work together to ensure that we are competing in each contest. Let’s work hard during the week to prepare for the game against Eddies which will again test our character.

Marist v Daramalan

Match Report by Tony Sullivan
The new season started after weeks of preseason training. Unfortunately, preparation has been disrupted due to a mountain of injuries and so a new combination took the field to go into battle against Dara. What many people may not realise is that our fullback Max got injured on Thursday, resulting in a number of position changes. I must mention that this U15 squad have been fantastic, turning up to each training and taking on board any challenge that has been put before them. This is a good sign for the season ahead.
The game had two completely different halves. The first half was mistake riddled, losing possession at vital times, giving penalties at the wrong end of the field, lack of commitment at the breakdown. These things combined gave Dara 90% of the ball (my Maths isn’t great but it was high). This meant that Marist got a lot of tackling practice. I said at the first training session that defence is important; we provide good defence and stop the opposition scoring then we go a long way to winning the game. And that is what we saw on Saturday. Our goal line defence was sensational. Mitch Benham, the smallest player on the paddock saved three tries on the goal line. Joe and Mike were tremendous workers across the park, while our outside backs, Marco, Cody, Sam and Isaac positioned themselves well to blunt any attack sent their way. This defence frustrated Dara and the tide was about to turn.
We focused at half time on three vital areas – adopting an effective kicking game – mainly to play in their half. We wanted this half to see a forward pack committed to put their bodies on the line – especially at the breakdown. Finally, we wanted to cut down our mistakes and maintain possession. What a turnaround. Zac was dominant at fly half, dictating play and organising our structure. He set up some wonderful tries and his kicking was excellent. This allowed our speedy outside backs to take advantage and Marco, Tom and Kaden began to dominate their opponents.
However, our forwards were the ones that took charge. Tyson, Joe, Nick, Sam, Matt, Oliver and Luca were now playing with authority, while Max, Tom and Aidan were great support in the ruck area. Our defence stood tall in the second half while our lineout work – especially from Sam –was impressive. One area that we have not put too much work into was the scrum, but we held our own and in fact won our fair share of the ball.
For our first hit out, considering our injury toll, this was a good start. We have stated at training many times that we must do the 1% right, we must be consistent and we must work hard as a team. When we are able to display this on the field I believe that this team has the potential to do something special this season. We lose a number of Yr. 10 players who are away on Trek, so our depth and willingness to play the brand of footy that we are promoting in the 15’s, will be put to the test yet again. I have the faith that this group are able to do it and I look forward to preparing the team during the week.
