Marist vs St Eddies
Round 1 Saturday 5th May 2018
Marist vs Canberra Grammar
The first game of the season started with Marist looking to get off to a good start and applying some early pressure, but they were unable to convert this pressure into points. The first two minutes of the game was spent between the two 22’s with both team as both teams blew out some post holiday rust. Marist finally cracked the Grammar defence after a some good continuity between the forwards and backs, enabling Sylas some room to mount an attacking raid into Grammar territory. This saw Marist show some excellent patience probing the Grammar defence over nine phases with Will finally punching through a hole to score under the posts, with Zac converting. 7-0 to Marist. This try triggered Marist to step up the tempo and they got into their groove. A good run from Noah B, the first of a number, was well supported by Jake who punched into a gap to run 40m to go under the posts for another try. Zac converted again. 14-0 to Marist. Following the re-start Grammar gained good field position and were keen to get some points on the board ahead of the break. Some good defence from Marist saw them field off these attacking raids and finally regaining possessions. An intelligent kick out of danger, followed by an excellent chase from the backs, forced a turnover with some good passing interchanges between the forwards and the backs that saw the ball passed to Sylas who ran 50m to score under the posts. Zac converted again with the score going to 21-0. This was to be the half time score after some good defence by the Marist forwards before the break.
The first ten minutes was an arm wrestle, once again being played in the middle 50m. There were snippets of good play from Marist who were stringing two to three phases together only to let themselves down with a knock on or loose carry. While Marist were struggling to find some continuity, they displayed good physicality in contact, with Pat and Matt leading the forward in both attach and defence. Marist finally got the momentum back with Ben initiated a clever attacking raid down the blind side which placed Marist back in Grammars 22, which saw Marist just short. Marist kept the pressure on and good pressure from Jake form a scrum saw Grammar spill the ball and Matt capitalised and scored. From the restart Marist again pushed back into Grammars 22 with another blind side attack consisting of some nice passing. On the back of a good chase from a grubber Marist forced a scrum from a Grammar mistake. After the forwards set a solid platform, Pat was too strong off the back and scored. From the restart, Marist maintained the momentum and pushed back into Grammars territory, again on the back of a good kick and chase. From the kick Marist put on some very strong defence forcing an error, with Matt capitalising for his second try. The final score being 36-0 and a solid start for the U14 Royals. What the boys will be particularly happy about is keeping Grammar try less.
