Marist Sky vs St Edmunds.

Background information has it, that there is allot of depth in St Edmunds u11’s this year.  Our Royal 11’s came away with a slim 7-0 win against this team in round 1.

The same goes for Marist 11’s – with both Royal and Sky teams training together as a unit, under the guidance of 5 coaches, T Ellis, G Bailey, M Henry, O Mamalai and J Harris, we train as a collective and assist each team together.  The boys train in a non-exclusive environment and the results are evident.

To the Game;

What a day, miserable, rain and poor conditions.  To add to these yucky conditions we had no referee allocated.  Big thanks to Marty Robinson for changing into his superman suite and refereeing the first half (mind you very well).

The boys were quickly put on the back foot in the opening 10 minutes with Eddies scoring a quick 2 tries and an assumption of an easy win.  Shoulders dropped, spirits dampened and the boys looked like they were in for one hell of a beating.

A break in play saw Oscar deliver a very pertinent message to the boys, reaffirming Marist was the better team (structure, talent and commitment). Affirmation of playing as a combined 11’s unit at training and the depth of support, saw some very inspired kids.

A determined try through the forwards by Isaac Witherden (Vegas) in the dying moments of the first half, realised boys spirits lifted and a sense of ‘we can do it’.

Again a quick chat at half time and on this occasion providing feedback on what Eddies were doing wrong, something different and the boys provided their own feedback  on how to counter their attack.

In all the game came down to the wire with a very gritty win by Marist, playing the ball through the forwards dominating the scrum and breakdown.

Points this week;

Seb Turner  (Spicey)– 3 points

Juddy – 2 points

Paddy Robinson (Robbo) – 1 point

All forwards were also awarded – 1 point by Oscar.

No special mentions this week, as all the boys deserved points.

Warm Regards, Justin

Match Report by Justin Harris

Marist Sky Start a Winning Streak.

Round 3 saw a massive effort from the boys, finally playing a structured game.
Marist Sky Played Burgman College in what was a well-deserved win.
From the get go the boys had listened to our coaching staff and played the game as planned, dominate at the breakdown two pick and drives, and out to the backs.  We were very pleased to see very basic fundamentals of the game adapted from training.
Oscar and I are concentrating on ‘positive reinforcement’ capitalising on what the boys are doing right.  Any negative aspect to the boys game is purely a discussion point at half time, with the boys offering solutions, with some guidance.  We have found that this works well and both aspects are taken on the field in the second half.  We cater to the fact the boys are only 11yo, and its all about development at this age.
Back to the game, we eventually lost track of the scoreboard, as the boys performed fantastic.
Points this week;
Will Harris – 3 points for stepping up to play No. 2, massive effort.
Will Seselja- 2 points for the outstanding commitment.
Ben Boundy – 1 point best game yet and best forward on display.
Special Mentions;
Sova Pogara – blind side run fantastic, along with team play.
Xavier Buckley – great support play to score 2 tries, on reflection we have awarded you 2 points also. Keep it up.
Willy Mamalai – fantastic job and great listening to distribute the ball, you set up a few tries.  Good work.
Nick Nagel – parting of the red sea came to mind, moving our forwards aside to shut down Burgmans no 1 off the tap.
Thomas Newton – best game ever, well committed.
Paddy Robinson – great depth and attack artist.
Harry Salmon – great hard hitting runs and concentrating on stabilising our scrum.
Juddy Verlin – Never a bad game ever, determined terrier.
Monte Walsh – versatile forward and fantastic commitment to all aspect of your game.
Seb Turner – Cant praise you enough, consistent every game, protector of our backs at every breakdown.
Henry York – missed you mate, look forward to you back on deck
Isaac Whitherden- same mate, your forward pack missed you.
Nathaniel Martino -massive thanks for coming to support your team with an injury,  very much missed in our tight 3.
Finally a massive thank you to Angus McRae for backing up from the 10's you're a true champion buddy.
Warm Regards, Justin

11 Sky v Gungahlin Eagles - 14 May 2016 - Round 2

Marist 35 defeated Gungahlin 19

Match Report by Justin Harris

Marist Sky Produce an Impressive Win.

The boys played an impressive Gungahlin side this weekend, well drilled in the forward pack.
The first half saw the boys apprehensive, as always – with playing a side they haven’t played before, there was clearly some nerves and apprehension in ability that were absolutely not warranted.  The ruck and breakdown were a ‘magnet ‘to our backs, seeing them drawn out of position, leaving massive gaps out wide.  As a result Gungahlin capitalised and put 2 quick tries on the board, that eventually led to an opposition lead going into half time.

A quick chat at half time focusing on what we were doing right and what we can do better. i.e. forwards working as a unit and backs staying in position, saw very different second half.
The result was – forwards providing clean ball at almost every breakdown, with our backs set in position to get the ball wide and run wide. This resulted in many tries that we started to lose count of.

As each try rolled on the message Oscar delivered was reinforcing the great work and listening to the game plan.  Great Work Boys!  Eventually Marist Sky came away with an impressive win, through nothing short of hard work and determination.

Points this week;
Patrick Robinson – 3 points, 5 tries legend, didn’t know what to say -big smile on your face.  Well done.
Juddy – very well deserved 2 points, turnovers and a serial pest to the opposition putting them off their game all day.
Nathaniel Martino – solid all day, commitment contact is unreal.  Stabilising a scrum as a loosehead is a gift.

Special Mentions;
Nick Nagel – rock solid in defence and distributing the ball.
Sova Pogara -great blind side run and rock solid all day.
Willy Mamalai – great work in pushing that ball forward in the backs.
Seb Turner – clean ball all day, great clean outs.
Isaac Witherton – transition to the forwards (the darkside), the best side – we’ve found your niche, not contact shy and cracka game.
Ben Boundy – best Game I’ve seen you play, great commitment.
Will Seselja – versatile utility, can play absolutely any position on the field – great tackling this week.
Monte Walsh – Tight Head, solid with a straight back, cleanouts, turnovers, the whole forward package.
Xavier Buckley – best game this season, running the ball and support.  Absolutely fantastic very special mention.
Harry Salmon – great tight head work, hard running of the ball.
Henry York – game changer, our pivot and ball distributer- playing for the team.
Will Harris -we see the resemblance in Fardy, so many turnovers in the second half we lost count, very special mention, hard as nails.
Thomas Newton – missed you again mate, your team mate miss you.  Hope you get well soon.

Marist Sky comes to play in Div 1.

What a great start to the season for all our boys playing in a very competitive comp.

The boys rose to the challenge and for 10 minutes held Uni Norths out from our line  - with everything learnt at training.  Eventually we gave way to a bigger and well drilled forward pack, pushing the ball forward, not before a few great hits were put on their key players to affirm Marist meant business.

Eventually another two tries were conceded to Uni, only due to spirits being down.

After a quick half time chat, the boys came out firing on all 8 cylinders, determined to hand back some punishment to Uni.  Our forwards were now playing at the ball off their feet and the back row were first to the breakdown to clean out.  Our backs were focused on marking up and pointing to their mark (intimidating rugby).

Unfortunately another try conceded by a poor call, but this didn’t damper the boys spirits.

Finally the boys scored in the last 10 through muscling up in the forwards to provide clean ball to the backs, rattling Uni and they were in tatters.  Had we played this style of rugby from the onset, would have been a different result.

Points went to;

Seb Turner 3 – played out of his skin with some rattling tackles, awesome commitment.

Patrick Robinson 2 – excellent defence and pin point attack.

Nathaniel Martino 1 – extremely hard running of the ball into contact.

Goes without saying – need some special mentions of boys;

Ben Boundy – cracker game and first to clean out at the breakdown.
Xavier Buckley – on the sting, when you get the ball its all over.
Willy Mamalai – hard running and very hard to stop.
Nick Nagel – our hit man, contact is awesome, keep it up.
Sova Pogara – George Gregan in the making, clean ball all day.
Harry Salmon – a forward with the skills of a back terrific.
Will Seselja – cleanout master and big defence.
Juddy – the next Pocock. The turnover master.
Monte Walsh – awesome tight head, we haven’t seen anything like you for a long time.
Isaac Witherton – excellent intent in running and attack, plus protection of players at the breakdown.
Will Harris – Ball stealer and hard hitter, made the other team work for it.
Henry York – Leader of the backs and did a great job in attack and defence. Impressed.
Thomas Newton – away sick, your team mates missed you mate.

Great Job boys, let’s keep it up.
