Under 10 Royal v Gungahlin Eagles -13 August 2016

After the disappointment of the loss to Eddies two weeks ago, we headed to Nicholls full of enthusiasm with the minor premiership on the line. The boys took off at a rate of knots, surprising the enormous Gungahlin Eagles forward pack with their early enthusiasm, letting us get away to an early 5-0 lead. However, as normally happens when you are the smaller team, the much bigger Gungahlin forward pack started to dominate with some big runs through our midfield causing the lead to see-saw for the rest of the first half.

A late try got us to within a try of the win, with Gungahlin leading 17-10 going into the break. A bit of a pep talk with the boys convinced them that the minor premiership was worth fighting for and they came out firing once again, with renewed enthusiasm for tackling the bigger kids starting all over the park leading to two long range tries from Bailey and Xander to take what turned into an unassailable lead. Some heart-in-mouth moments ensued for the final 5 minutes of the game, but the boys growing confidence and composure saw them hold on for our second win over the Gungahlin team for the year.

With one round left against Vikings we are now focussing on the finals, and what may end up ultimately being a rematch against Gungahlin in the Grand Final in a few weeks time. However, we aren’t getting too far ahead of ourselves with one more game left and the semi-final to follow, to consolidate what has been a great season for these boys, some of whom are playing rugby for the first time.
